Salty-sweet fat bombs – for gourmet Ketonians

Salty-sweet taste is usually reserved for the gourmet experience lovers. Well, let’s be honest, after the years have passed and you haven’t been consuming anything with added sugar, your taste buds are already totally awoken. Even though if you were using Keto friendly sweeteners, the impact that added sugar does to our taste buds is quite diminished.

If you really care about your sense of satiety, this plays a big role. Dealing with the time in between your meals, or training your body and mind for better fasting endurance can be challenging. Is it savoury or is it just sweet but salty?

As a non-native English speaker, I have always been confused with this terms. Salty-Sweet is also non-existent in the traditional cuisine of my region. However, Greeks love to experiment with it! This is why these salty-sweet fat bombs delighted my Greek husband!

Indeed, what if we wanted to create something that’s exactly in between salty and sweet? Experiments like this usually fail due to our specific distinguished sense of these two tastes. But if you take the things slowly, and add salt and sweetener bit by bit, so that neither of them takes over the main stage, you will be pleasantly surprised!

Salty-Sweet taste 

Logically, humans can sense sweet, salty, bitter, sour, and umami. Our tongue can detect and distinguish all of them at once. Interestingly, our judgment of taste connects back to our remnant instinct, it helps us to decide which of the taste is our favourite. According to a study from the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Healthcare, the sensation of sweet or salty is “usually a symbol of food rich in nutrients,”. This is signalling our body and our mind that we should eat! At the same time, bitter taste used to be the only indicator if something is poisonous or spoiled in the early history of mankind.

Obviously, we have evolved to recognise that not every bitter or sour food is bad for us. However, we still get the most passionate satisfaction out of eating sweet and salty foods. And guess what, when you play around with these two flavours and don’t allow any of them to become dominant, you are discovering a totally new dimension of palatable experience!

How is this Keto?

In many ways! First of all, fat-bombs can, and to many ketonians usually help boost their fat intake. Furthermore, they help us in those times when we crave chocolate!   • 150 g (5.2 oz) peanut butter (unsalted/unsweetened) organic (or any other nut butter of your choice)
  • 150 g (5.2 oz) butter we used goat butter, you can use any grass fed
  • 30 g (1 oz) cacao butter
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tsp Ceylon cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2/3 tsp sea salt we used Flower of sea salt
  • 2 tsp Stevia blend sweetener
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper optional
  • 1 tbsp organic cacao powder preferably raw


  • On a very low temperature, melt all the ingredients in a saucepan. Stir so that all the ingredients unify nicely. The mixture must not boil, but it needs to be hot enough to be easily poured into the moulds.
  • Prepare silicon chocolate praline moulds or ice trays. Pour in the mixture. We were able to make 60 fat-bombs out of this amount of ingredients.
  • Place them in the freezer for “1 hour or in the refrigerator overnight. Consume them after a good Keto meal to boost your fat intake. You can also have a few of them as Keto dessert after your meal. Never eat them in between the meals.
