A perfect intermittent fasting beverage is water – of course. Maybe mineral water with a dash of salt. However, many people struggle with the almighty intermittent fast and desperately want to drink coffee. Well, I’ve been asked one million times by clients, just how much coffee can they have during the fast. Not much, if you ask me. Even the plain black coffee, with no sweetener, will spike the insulin after the second cup. In some cases, a second cup is already too much!
In short, what is Intermittent fasting?
As a ketonian on a weight-loss journey, you must have heard about it. You can find numerous articles online, of which the most informative is the one you can read in this link. Of course, intermittent fasting is not a new idea. People have been doing it for medical, spiritual or even cosmetic reasons since the beginning of time. Even the father of modern medicine Hippocrates mentioned something that could be described as fasting.
“Everyone has a physician inside him or her; we just have to help them in their work. The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well. Our food should be our medicine. Our medicine should be our food. But to eat when you are sick is to feed your sickness.”
“Instead of using medicine, rather, fast a day.”
However, much has changed in modern times. For example, in processed foods these days we have the omnipresence of sugars and trans fats – which leads to a large increase in obesity worldwide.
This increase had catastrophic consequences. Obesity not only increases the likelihood of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular issues but is also a significant economic burden. So, researchers are now looking for ways to alleviate ever greater obesity rates.
Most people claim that constant hunger is one of their biggest challenges in adhering to weight loss plans. Intermittent fasting sounds like something they will not be able to survive and they keep asking for hacks and tricks. The best thing I can recommend here is to occupy yourself with something you love passionately. (Just not cooking) When you concentrate on something that gives you great excitement, you will not even think about food nor hunger. And with a grain or two of salt, your brain will immediately get the signal that food is not needed.
Short facts about intermittent fasting
Despite the popular belief, intermittent fasting is not a “diet” because there is no list of foods that you can or can not eat. Instead, it is more of a lifestyle change. Whether you decide to fast for 12, 14, 16 or 24 hours, you are simply managing the energy intake and teaching your body to burn your own fat for energy. Well, trust me, your body is well familiar with this technique, it just needs to be reminded!
But we can still drink?
Yes, and this doesn’t mean you can drink litres and litres of coffee and tea. Even if you take too much water, you could flush out all the minerals. The most difficult part for many people is dealing with the early morning beverage. When they just wake up, all they want is coffee. This is a cultural and psychological phenomenon. If your body could talk, it would ask you just for some water and a few minerals. Not coffee, not even tea. But, since we already grew to be addicted to certain taste in the morning, let me recommend you something that will change your intermittent fasting mornings into perfect and joyful moments.
Remember the orange juice?
In many movies and TV shows, you often see the main actor getting up from the bed and going straight to the fridge for some orange juice. How many of you have done this before? How many of you reached for the perfect sour-sweet ratio to wake you up. Even before the coffee? Well, even though the orange juice is one of unhealthiest options, the good thing about it is the citric acid, vitamin C and some minerals. So, if we exclude the sugar, maybe we can still enjoy this refreshing waking-up effect of orange juice?! Remember, orange essential oil is quite Keto friendly.
Captain Picard’s Tea
I would recommend keeping the coffee for a later stage during the day. Anyway, you will not enjoy it as a first beverage in the morning as much as you would with cream, butter or sweetener… For a perfect wake-up beverage on an intermittent fasting day, I would recommend you something that even Captain Picard would approve! 1 bag Ear Grey or Lady Grey tea
4 drops 100% liquid extract of monk fruit or stevia*
1 pinch citric acid (from lemons)
1 pinch sea salt
- Prepare the tea as usual. Now ideally you will drink it unsweetened during the fasting period. But if you still can’t adjust to this, a 100% extract of monk fruit or stevia will help.
- Add salt and citric acid.
- Enjoy as it is if you want a cup of hot tea or add ice cubes for iced tea version.
- If you are using a sweetener, it’s mandatory to have a 100% extract without any additives.
