How is this Keto?
Well, it’s more Keto Mediterranean than you think! As you know, we recommend eating ruminant animal meat as the staple of your KMD nutrition. This also includes wild game, lamb, mutton and goat meat. Some people are quite sensitive and have never eaten anything else but beef or pork.
Unfortunately, these Ketonians are missing all the amazing nutrients and flavours. Here’s where mighty juniper berry comes as a culinary hero. Ever since ancient times Greeks and Romans used ground juniper berries to mask the gamey flavour. Only the best chefs knew the secret to this.
Traditional cuisines use juniper berries with meat, especially when wild game is on the menu. Also, it’s a great additive to pickled salads, such as sauerkraut or Turshi!
But it’s much more than just a powerful spice
The healing properties of juniper berries are numerous. A tea made with them strengthens the nerves. It cleanses the blood, removes toxic gases! Many studies showed its medicinal properties, but this one in particular is good.
Juniper berries are also a mild diuretic. They remove toxins through urine, cure bladder and kidney disease. They can also cleanse the liver. Furthermore, they can help with stone and sand reduction from the bile, kidneys or bladder.
Mighty Juniper berries and young tops are recommended for the treatment of lung diseases, especially asthma. An ancient recipe calls for young tops cooked in goat milk to cure gout, rheumatism, sciatica, scurvy, nervous disorders and more…
There are almost 60 different species of Juniper trees. However, the one we’ll use in this recipe is known as Juniperus communis (comon juniper). It is native to North America, Europe, northern Asia and Japan
The healing effect of juniper mainly comes from the essential oil. This oil is mostly found in the berries. In cases where even antibiotics cannot help, juniper oil works. Numerous studies showed that it has a potent antioxidant content and blood sugar reducing abilities!
Steam from juniper oil and water, due to the action of turpentine oil it contains, purifies the respiratory organs. It also heals the bronchi and heals inflammation of the throat and lungs.
